For grades 3 – 6:

Captain Nobody by Dean Pitchford. Read by the author. When his football star brother is knocked unconscious during a game, ten-year-old Newt, caught up in the whirlwind of worry about his brother, creates a new role for himself – Captain Nobody, defender of the little guy! Great story about friendship and being compassionate.

Extra Credit by Andrew Clements. Read by Gabra Zackman. Another winner from the prolific Clements about a girl who is failing sixth grade and might have to repeat the grade – not because she can’t do her schoolwork – because she doesn’t like doing her schoolwork. When her teacher assigns an extra credit project – writing to a pen pal in Afghanistan, the two “pals” learn much about each other’s lives. Also available on CD by the same author: Frindle and The Landry News.

Night of the Twisters by Ivy Ruckman. Read by Riley Dugan. Fast-paced, exciting story about two twelve year olds who live in Grand Island, Nebraska – a place where tornado warnings are a way of life. One summer night, the warning is issued and the boys, along with the baby brother of one of them, have only seconds to get to the basement before the twister is upon them. Little do they know that even if they survive the storm, their ordeal will have only just begun.

Werewolf versus Dragon by David Sinden, Matthew Morgan, and Guy MacDonald. Read by Gerard Doyle. Great new adventure-mystery series about a rescue center for werewolves, dragons, fairies, giants, sea monsters, and other fantastical creatures operated by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Beasts. In this first installment, a dragon arrives at the RSPCB and Ulf the werewolf uncovers a dark and terrifying secret! Book number 2 also available, Sea Monsters and Other Delicacies. Coming soon, book number 3: Bang Goes a Troll.

Allie Finkle’s Rules for Girls. Best Friends and Drama Queens by Meg Cabot. Read by Tara Sands.

When the new girl at school starts bullying the others into doing things they don’t want to do, Allie has to decide whether being true to herself is worth the price of rejection. Sometimes funny, sometimes bittersweet, this is a great story of friendship, loyalty, and fitting in!

Hotel for Dogs by Lois Duncan. Read by Katherine Kellgren. Funny story about two kids who pack the stray dogs they’ve come to love into an old abandoned house – and have to make sure they won’t get caught running their hotel for dogs. Also available by the same author and narrator: News for Dogs.

Magic Tree House Book 37 – 40: Dragon of the Red Dawn, Monday with a Mad Genius, Dark Day in the Deep Sea, and Eve of the Emperor Penguin by Mary Pope Osborne. Read by the author.

Four of the newest in one of the best fantasy series around for children in grades 3 – 6.

Love, Aubrey by Suzanne LeFleur. Read by Becca Battoe. When a tragic accident turns 11-year-old Aubrey’s life around, she turns to writing to express feelings that seem impossible to describe. Wonderful story about family and the healing powers of friendship, love, and memory.

Baseball Great by Tim Green. Read by the author. Great, fast-paced story about two middle-schoolers who put themselves in peril to probe steroid use on a youth baseball team.

The Sword Thief by Peter Lerangis. Book Three of The 39 Clues. Read by David Pittu. Action-packed thriller, third in the series, about the hunt for the 39 clues – clues that will unlock the most powerful secret the world has ever known. Visit the official website at www.the39clues.com for information on how to search and discover clues and secrets in the most unlikely places!

The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. Read by the author. Nobody Owens, known to his friends as Bod, is a normal boy. He would be completely normal if he didn’t live in a graveyard, being raised and educated by ghosts, with a guardian who belongs to neither the world of the living or of the dead. A magical and terrifying supernatural adventure story by the author of Coraline.

Freaky Monday by Mary Rodgers and Heather Hach. Read by Jennifer Stone. By the author of Freaky Friday. When Hadley and her teacher, Ms. Pitt, find themselves switched into each other's bodies, the first thing they want to do is switch right back. It takes a family crisis, a baffled principal, and a (double) first kiss to help them figure out that change can be pretty enlightening. Even if it is a little freaky!

Lucky Breaks by Susan Patron. Read by Cassandra Campbell. Sequel to the Newbery-award winning The Higher Power of Lucky, this tale continues the musings of Lucky Tipton as she looks for adventure and a best girl friend.

The Red Blazer Girls by Michael D. Beil. Read by Tai Alexandra Ricci. It all began with The Scream. And ended with . . . well, if we told you that, it wouldn’t be a mystery! But in between The Scream and The Very Surprising Ending, three friends find themselves on a scavenger hunt set up for a girl they never met, in search of a legendary ring reputed to grant wishes. Wonderful mystery/adventure story.

Chasing Vermeer by Blue Balliett. Read by Ellen Reilly. A novel about a stolen Vermeer painting that is suspenseful and exciting, filled with clues that you, the reader, must figure out.

Oracles of Delphi Keep by Victoria Laurie. Read by Susan Duerden. Thrilling story about two orphans who get caught up in a centuries-old fight against an unfathomable evil.

The White Giraffe by Lauren St. John. Read by Adjoa Andoh. Martine’s parents are killed in a fire, and she must leave her home in England to live on a wildlife reserve in Africa with a grandmother she never knew she had. As soon as she arrives at the reserve, she hears whispering of a mythical animal living there – a white giraffe. Although the giraffe is real, Martine must use all of her courage and smarts to figure out why its existence is kept secret.

The Crossroads by Chris Grabenstein. Read by J.J. Myers. Scary story about a kid named Zack and the ghost who is trying to kill him!
